In Africa, Vasco de Gama colonized Mozambique in 1500 with ships and weapons. Therefore, Africa lost part of their population, which means they were not able to protect their trade routes. They had less space for their citizens to live.Īfrica was harmed for fighting with Vasco da Gama and his sailors, and in result he killed hundreds of Muslims from Africa (" Vasco Da Gama - A Portuguese Explorer"). Not only the decrease of resources but with the fact that the explorer captured Goa, part of India for trading, India lost part of their land ("Campbell"). Since da Gama traded spices with India for trinkets India's amount of resource has decreased (Winser). India and Africa were the two main countries that were harmed due to da Gama's exploration. Before the exploration, Portuguese had to cross the Mediterranean or Arabia, which was very dangerous at that time ("Vasco Da Gama Facts").Īlthough da Gama colonized Mozambique in Africa in 1732, maize and cassava were introduced to Africa by Portugal, which was an increase of resources in Mozambique ("Mozambique Timeline). Another advantage of the exploration to the nation was that they had a direct route to Asia. Finally, Portugal became really wealthy by representing the amount of spices and Asians goods Vasco da Gama brought back and trade. This was a great impact on the Portuguese economy. Since this explorer brought a fair amount of spices, he started the spice trade in Portugal. Therefore, they had to rely upon trade in order to grow and become a powerful nation. Before, da Gama's exploration was carried out, Portugal was relatively a poor resource country ( Columbus, De Gama"). Portuguese were largely benefitted from Vasco Da Gama's exploration. For those impacts, some people consider him as a hero while some people consider him as a tyrant. Vasco da Gama has created positive and negative impacts to the world.
